Sailors can turn to the free SailTies app for hardware-free live tracking and automatic voyage logs as SafeTrx prepares to shut down at the end of December

As Afloat reported recently, the SafeTrx app will shut down on 31 December, ending a service widely used for voyage tracking in the UK, Ireland and Australia.

Its closure leaves sailors seeking a replacement for real-time visibility and safety monitoring.

SailTies, a free app with more than 35,000 users, has positioned itself as the successor. It offers hardware-free live tracking and automatic voyage logging.

The app allows users to share GPS tracks, record voyages, and add photos, statistics and distance summaries. It requires no additional equipment.

“SafeTrx closing has highlighted how important voyage tracking is for sailors,” said SailTies co-founders Thomas and Chris. They said SailTies aims to make tracking “effortless and accessible”.

Survey data from November reports that 71% of SailTies users sail weekly or monthly. The app holds a Net Promoter Score of +67 and a 4.9 rating on the App Store.

Users describe it as “automatic, easy, reassuring”, with some saying they sail more often as they build a digital logbook.

SailTies is available now on the App Store and Google Play.
