The Ocean Cruising Club has opened applications for its Youth Sponsorship Programme, offering young sailors the chance to gain offshore experience. The scheme supports people aged 18 to 25 to join long-distance voyages of at least 1,000 nautical miles.
Funding contributes towards the cost of sailing as crew on boats owned by experienced OCC members. The programme also helps skippers recruit crew for ocean passages, linking experienced sailors with newcomers.
Applicants are not required to have offshore experience but must demonstrate basic sailing ability. This includes holding qualifications such as the RYA Competent Crew Certificate or equivalent practical experience.
Voyages are limited to yachts under 70 feet and must meet the criteria for an Ocean Cruising Club qualifying passage. The initiative aims to develop skills and confidence among young sailors while supporting offshore sailing opportunities.
