Ted Turner 1938-2026

6th May 2026
“Shipmates
Shipmates and rivals - Dennis Conner with the late Ted Turner during the 1988 America's Cup campaigns.

Ted Turner, legendary American communications and business pioneer, and arguably the most accomplished international yachtsman of the 20th Century, has died at the age of 87.

His extraordinary life covered a very wide range of active interests. But for the global sailing community, he is the skipper who successfully defended the America's Cup racing the appropriately-named Courageous when the racing was in the International 12 Metre Class at Newport, Rhode Island, and as well he was overall winner of the storm-struck 1979 Fastnet Race sailing the 63ft sloop Tenacious.

We will be taking a more detailed overview of the life and times of Ted Turner in due course in Afloat.ie, meanwhile we salute one of sailing's true 'Greats', and our condolences are with his very many shipmates.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
