Bryon Ehkhart’s JK 88 Lucky now has the same relationship with the 1,250 miles Sydney-Auckland Race 2025 as she had – as George David’s Rambler 88 – with the 700-mile Round Ireland Race in 2016.

She has taken line honours, set a course record of 2 days and 20 hours that could well stand for a long time, and gone on to take the IRC win as smaller craft made the best of a sometimes baffling Tasman Sea, with second placed Frantic, Mike Martin’s TP 52 Frantic, finishing with very little left in the way of spinnakers.

With a crew including ex-Pat Trevor Smyth of Clontarf, Frantic had the additional satisfaction of leading the former record holder, the Santa Cruz 72 Antipodes, by a substantial on-the-water margin by the finish.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
