The Round Ireland Yacht Race fleet continues to build momentum ahead of its biennial June start with this week's news that two near-identical 43-footers are set to line up.
Frank Whelan’s new Sydney GTS 43 'Syd' has joined the entry list alongside Géry Trentesaux’s Long Courrier.
Both boats are Sydney GTS 43 models designed by Jason Ker. They are regarded as sisterships, with only small differences in weight and sail area and similar IRC ratings.
Trentesaux, a former Rolex Fastnet Race overall winner, confirmed his Wicklow start earlier this month.
The French skipper’s Long Courrier was among a tight group in the 2025 Fastnet. She finished close to the Sydney GTS Abracadabra and Albator, now owned by Johnnie Treanor and also entered for Round Ireland as CrisTina, before winning well on handicap.
Race trackers from Fastnet showed the trio frequently within sight of each other offshore.

Abracadabra, campaigned by the New York Yacht Club team at the Admiral’s Cup, is also a Sydney GTS design. However, she was extensively modified with a taller rig, lighter displacement and a higher rating.
According to Afloat sources, Whelan’s boat arrived from Croatia, where she previously raced successfully as Coin Coin.
The new Greystones Sailing Club campaign plans a full build-up. The programme includes ISORA racing, the Dun Laoghaire to Cork Race, Cork Week and Calves Week.
The boat is currently undergoing a hull respray.
The crew will feature a core group of Greystones sailors, alongside experienced offshore names including Marty O’Leary, four-time Olympic keelboat ace Mark Mansfield and John White.
According to Afloat sources, the entry was lodged on Wednesday, 18 February. Wicklow organisers update the official list periodically.
As Afloat reports, the fleet continues to grow ahead of the June start.
