Entries have opened for the 2026 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, with seven months to go before the start of the offshore classic. Organisers at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania are encouraging crews to register early for the 81st edition of the race.
Last year’s fleet of 128 yachts was the second largest this century.
First raced in 1945 with nine yachts, the 628-nautical-mile contest has grown into one of the world’s most recognised offshore races.

CYCA Commodore Dr Sam Haynes said the club expects another strong and varied fleet for this year’s race. “Following the success of last year's 80th Sydney Hobart, we look forward to welcoming another diverse and competitive fleet to this year’s race,” Haynes said. “The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is one of the great sporting events in the world.”
The 2025 race delivered one of the event’s landmark moments when Jiang Lin and French sailor Alexis Loison became the first double-handed crew to win overall since the division was introduced in 2021.
Lin also became the first woman owner-skipper to claim the Tattersall Cup. “For me, I hope that it brings more attention to double-handed racing,” Lin said after the race. “As a woman skipper, I hope women realise that dreams can come true if you try hard enough.”
Race organisers expect increased interest in the double-handed division this year following that breakthrough result. International entries are also expected to remain strong after 16 overseas boats competed in 2025, including New Caledonia’s BNC - my::NET / LEON and American entry Lucky.

Attention is also turning to the maxi fleet after six 100-foot yachts lined up for last year’s race. Master Lock Comanche is expected to return in 2026 alongside Palm Beach XI, the former Wild Oats XI, after its return to the race last year.
The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race starts in Sydney Harbour on Boxing Day and finishes in Hobart, Tasmania. Entries close at 1700 local time on Friday 23 October.
