Pip Hare has been forced to retire from the Vendée Globe after her IMOCA Medallia dismasted some 800 nautical miles south of Australia on Sunday night Irish time (15 December).
The British yachtswoman, who last year spoke with Afloat about her Vendée Globe ambitions, described how Medallia “took off on a wave and when it landed the mast broke into two pieces and fell down”.
Hare added that she is unhurt but “devastated” after the incident put and end to her race.
“This is four years of preparation and planning and four years of development, the boat and I were in really great shape, having a really good race and we were about halfway round the world. So, to dismast now is really brutal,” Hare said.
The eighth woman in the world to complete the Vendée Globe has jury-rigged a sail with what’s left of her mast and is in contact with her team and race management.
