The overall Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta Champions, Nigel Biggs and Dave Cullen in Checkmate, put down a stout defence of their 2023 title by winning the opening Bay Race of the 2025 event on Thursday (10 July).
Racing again in one of the biggest classes, Coastal A Divison, the Howth Yacht Club First 50 crossed the finish line in a corrected time of 2 hours:19 minutes:15 seconds, nearly three minutes ahead of Johnny Treanor's J112e ValenTina (2:21:51), a skipper who goes under the burgees of the Royal Irish Yacht Club, National Yacht Club and Schull Harbour Sailing Club.

Ronan Mooney's dazzle-painted JPK 10.30 Coquine from the Royal Irish Yacht Club was third in a corrected time of 2:23:40.

The Coastal A class were part of group one in the Bay Race, which comprised two groups on different courses with downwind starts, for a combined fleet of nearly 200 boats.
Race Officer Con Murphy postponed racing for 45 minutes because of visibility issues due to a sea fog.
When the action finally got underway, competitors enjoyed bright sunshine with a small chop and ebbing tide on Dublin Bay, with wind at 145 degrees, 10-12 mph.
