A facsimile edition of Joyful Pilgrimage, John Barry’s 1964 account of a reconstructed monastic sea voyage, has been republished.
The book retells a 1963 journey from Derry to Iona in the Hebrides, echoing the route taken by St Columba in the sixth century. The crew travelled in a traditional Irish currach.
Barry, who initiated the project, recounts the planning and execution with what he described as “dry humour”, presenting the endeavour as a shared feat rather than a personal achievement.
The voyage involved a skipper, designer, boat builder and crew members who contributed to the construction and sailing of the vessel. The edition includes drawings and photographs.

The book also features reflections by Wallace Clark, who built and skippered the curragh. He discusses its design, performance and how it might have been improved.
Barry, born in Belfast in 1915, was ordained in 1938. His writing links the voyage to wider themes of faith, travel and cultural connection.
Vinycomb Press publishes the new paperback edition. It is available on Amazon and is expected in selected bookshops in November.
A 25-minute film about the voyage, narrated by Wallace Clark, is available on YouTube (below).
