The Aran island of Inis Mór plans to revive an annual Galway Hooker regatta which had not been held there for a number of years.

Weather permitting, Féile na mBád, Árainn takes place this Saturday, August 24th, with races starting at 12 noon off Inis Mór’s main harbour at Cill Rónain.

The event aims to revive the tradition of Galway Hookers, where they would deliver turf to the three islands from Connemara, and also mark Lá Fhéile Peadar agus Póil in late June.

The date of August 24th was selected as the only free day on the busy classic boat regatta calendar, according to organisers.

Apart from the racing, there will be a pebble painting contest in the community hall, and traditional music sessions, dancing and general festivities in Cill Rónain.

All are welcome and there will be live updates of the races, and a special dinner for the skippers and crew in Tí Joe Watty’s pub after the racing.
