The full-scale replica of Christopher Columbus's flagship, the Nao Santa María, will make its first-ever visit to Drogheda this week, opening to the public at Fiddle Case Pier from Thursday 17 July to Saturday 26 July.

The 200-ton wooden sailing ship is one of the highlights of the Fundación Nao Victoria's 2026 European tour and offers visitors the chance to step aboard a faithful reconstruction of the vessel that led Columbus's 1492 Atlantic voyage.

Built in Spain in 2018 to mark the 525th anniversary of Columbus's first voyage, the replica was constructed by traditional shipwrights using iroko and pine timber, based on historical research into the original vessel.

Visitors can explore the ship's decks and interior, learn about life aboard a 15th-century ocean-going vessel, and discover the navigational achievements that shaped the Age of Discovery. Organisers describe the Nao Santa María as a floating museum promoting Spain's maritime and cultural heritage.

The vessel will be open daily from 10am to 8pm, with visits suitable for families, schools and organised groups.

To mark the ship's first visit to Drogheda, advance online bookings made before 16 July qualify for discounted admission. Organisers say online ticket holders will receive priority if capacity is reached.
