Irish solo sailor Gráinne Costigan is set to make history as the first Irish woman to race solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She will navigate the renowned Mini Transat route aboard her 6.5-metre boat, Sea Fever.

The crossing is planned for September 2025 and will be conducted entirely alone, without external assistance. The boat measures just over 21 feet long.

“This isn’t just about one sailor and one boat,” Costigan said. “It’s about showing what’s possible.” She aims to inspire young women to tackle bold challenges in sailing.

Before her Atlantic crossing, Gráinne will compete in the Mini Fastnet race this June. This race involves setting out from France to navigate around the Fastnet Rock lighthouse off the Irish coast.

Based in Barcelona, Gráinne trains with Base Mini Barcelona, a well-known centre for offshore sailing. She balances training, logistics, and sponsorship outreach alongside a full-time job.

Costigan is seeking support from individuals, businesses, and sailing organisations for her campaign, which aims to redefine representation in sailing.
