Julian Hughes has secured the 1720 Eastern Championship title at Royal Ulster Yacht Club. His boat Root 1 claimed first overall with consistent top-three finishes.

Robert Dix on LemonCello placed second, just one point behind on nett scores. National champion Ross McDonald’s Rope Dock Atara completed the podium in third.

Fourth went to El Diablo, helmed by Ben Scallan, while Andrew G Boyle’s No Show finished fifth after a strong final race.

Hughes, from Waterford Harbour Sailing Club, emerged as the best performer.

Race Officer Sheela Lewis got more races in on Sunday dealing with a light breeze, quite the contrast to Saturday's racing.

In the end, the results all came down to a protest room after the final race, with Andrew Boyle’s No Show protesting Julian Hughe’s Root 1 for a finish line infringement in Race 5, according to Royal Ulster's Fiona Hicks. "The points were so close the outcome could have had a big impact. The protest went in Root 1’s favour, and they were crowned Eastern Champions".

Ross McDonald and the Atara crew won the Joe English Trophy.

The championship attracted 11 entries, with five races completed over two days. A single discard was applied under Appendix A scoring.
