Peter Browne, a distinguished sailor and long-standing member of Strangford Lough Yacht Club (SLYC), in Northern Ireland has died at the age of 94.
He passed away peacefully on Christmas Eve, prompting tributes from across the sailing community.
Browne and his wife, Mary, were active members of SLYC for nearly 70 years. In 2022, they were made Honorary Members in recognition of their decades-long contribution to the club.
“Peter represented the club with distinction,” said SLYC Commodore Peter Niblock. “Particularly in Flying Fifteens, where he won numerous national championships, and also in the River Class.”
A service of thanksgiving will be held on Tuesday, 6 January at Kilmood Parish Church in Killinchy.
Commodore Niblock extended the club’s condolences: “We offer our most sincere sympathies to his wife Mary, daughters Kate and Lisa, and their wider family circle.”
Peter Browne is remembered not just for his sailing success, but also for his enduring presence in the club’s life and spirit.
