The 2026 International Moth European Championship has officially opened in L’Escala, Spain, with an institutional ceremony at the regatta village ahead of racing on 9 June. Representatives from sailing organisations and public authorities attended the event, which marked the start of one of the premier regattas on the foiling sailing calendar.

The ceremony included presentations by Gerard Marin, Commodore of Club Nàutic l’Escala; Franco Greggi, representative of the International Moth Class; Boran Mínic, Councillor for Sports at L’Escala City Council; and Narcís Cassasa, Territorial Representative for Sport in Girona for the Generalitat de Catalunya.

Speakers highlighted the championship's importance for the region and Club Nàutic l’Escala's commitment to hosting major international sailing events. A traditional flag-raising ceremony formally declared the championship open, followed by a reception for competitors, organisers and guests.

Racing is scheduled to begin on 9 June, with sailors competing over the coming days for the European title. The championship further strengthens L’Escala’s reputation as a venue for international sailing competition. Organisers said the event reflects the club’s focus on high-performance sport while showcasing the sailing conditions of the Mar d’Empúries.
