The Irish J/24 Class is seeking fresh teams to join what it bills as one of the world’s most competitive and accessible keelboat fleets.
Irish crews have made their mark internationally. Headcase, a three-time European champion team, became the first Irish crew to win the J/24 World Championship earlier this month.
“The J/24 offers high-level racing at an affordable cost,” said class captain Mark Usher. “We want to help new teams step into the fleet with ease.”
As the most mass-produced keelboat globally, the J/24 benefits from vast online resources, second-hand boats and spare parts, and a deep pool of shared knowledge.
The class is targeting a wide range of sailors. Teams from other one-design and cruiser-racer fleets, including J/109s, SB20s and Sigma 33s, are being encouraged to make the switch. U25 squads are also a focus, supported by ongoing ICRA funding for youth programmes in 2026.
The annual calendar features three to four regional championships plus Nationals, with opportunities to compete at European and World level. Entry fees average €150, and charter boats are available.
Training support is also on offer, with professional coaching planned for 2026 and a strong culture of knowledge-sharing within the fleet.
The J/24 Class highlights its inclusive reputation, with women competing in both mixed and all-female teams. Racing is described as “fierce on the water and friendly ashore”.
