Malahide Yacht Club welcomed competitors from various clubs to their annual March Hare Regatta. A strong fleet of over 60 dinghies on the water comprised of ILCAs, Toppers, Oppies and a PY fleet in the main competition, alongside a regatta PY fleet of Oppies, RS Fevas, and Topaz dinghies.
The weather proved to be a significant factor in the day’s racing, as gusty winds made for exhilarating but demanding conditions. Competitors had to contend with unpredictable shifts and powerful gusts, testing their boat handling and tactical decision-making to the limit.
In the main fleet, capsizes were frequent, but the determination of the sailors shone through as they quickly recovered and continued racing. The ILCA sailors demonstrated remarkable control, navigating the gusts with precision to maintain their speed and positioning. Skerries Sailing Club’s Darragh & Mia Kelleher won the ILCA 7 & 4 fleets respectively with MYC sailor Sasha Benpalzi winning ILCA 6 fleet.
The Topper fleet was tested in the strong gusts as some competitors showed incredible determination to recover from capsizes with local sailor Alex Butcher taking the trophy. Meanwhile, the PY fleet was won by MYC 420 sailors Aishling Cronin & Hugo Butler. While some Oppies chose to migrate to the regatta fleet, those remaining with the main competition displayed incredible resilience with the trophy won by Holly Cantwell from RStGYC.
The regatta fleet provided a fantastic opportunity for developing sailors to test themselves in competition. The sailors showed great adaptability, mastering the changing conditions with growing confidence. Overall winner of the Regatta fleet was MYC Oppie sailor Noah John Carty.
Throughout the day, races were expertly managed by Race Officers Neil Murphy and Russell Camier, working hard to ensure fair and safe racing while adjusting courses as necessary to account for the shifting winds. Support crews were kept busy assisting capsized sailors, and ensuring safety remained the top priority.
At the end of the regatta, tired sailors gathered for the prize-giving ceremony. The event not only highlighted a healthy competitive spirit within the sailing community but also strengthened the bonds between visiting and home clubs as anticipation builds for the dinghy racing calendar ahead.
