The RS400 Winter Series resumed on Sunday, 9 November, under optimal sailing conditions on Belfast Lough. After heavy rain overnight, competitors were greeted with clear skies and a gentle 10-12 kt breeze from the south west.
With 13 boats launched, Race Officer Gerry Reid managed the proceedings. The first start sequence was challenged by aggressive jockeying for position, leading to a general recall. Reid swiftly raised the black flag, resulting in only two disqualifications during the restart.
Ross Kearney and Andrew Vaughan were first around the initial mark, followed closely by Jocelyn Hill and Rowan Berry. The rest of the fleet remained competitive, creating a thrilling atmosphere.
On the downwind leg, Gareth Flannigan and Knox Wilson executed a successful gybe, overtaking to claim the lead on the second lap, with Peter Kennedy and Stephen Kane nearby. “I appreciate the reminder about crossing the start line,” remarked one sailor after the initial confusion.
In the second start, many boats opted for a port tack from the pin end, leading to a balanced spread at the first mark. Once again, Ross and Andrew led, trailed by Gareth and Knox.
As the wind conditions fluctuated, the fleet maintained its positions throughout the race. In the final race, Adam and his crew achieved a strong start, rounding the top mark first, with Gareth and Knox close behind, followed by Jocelyn and Rowan.
Next week’s race is anticipated to see an increased fleet, as additional boats were noted arriving during the post-race social.
