Day 4 of the RS400 Frostie Series at the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club was abandoned on Sunday after winds in Belfast Harbour climbed above 32 knots.
The forecast had shifted sharply within a day, with the breeze swinging west and strengthening beyond racing limits.
The club’s rescue crew inspected the course area and reported that conditions were “just too much”, prompting organisers to cancel racing.
Robert Espey and Michael Ferguson, competing in the series for the first time, took a brief sail despite the decision. They were on the water for twenty minutes before returning ashore.
They said the abandonment was “the right call”, though they noted they had likely broken their downwind speed record with a reported 18.2 knots.
Racing is scheduled to resume next Sunday at 13:30, subject to weather conditions.
