The Topper dinghy Winter Championship 2025 took place at Malahide Yacht Club’s Broadmeadows venue over the weekend of 15th-16th March 2025, bringing together some of Ireland’s most talented young sailors for an intense two-day competition. Organised by Gemma Hooper-Jones, MYC Sailing Secretary and Topper Class Captain, and managed on the water by MYC Vice Commodore /Race Officer Niall Gallagher, the event saw eight races delivered in challenging but fair conditions.

Competitive Fleet

With four races daily in the La Roche-Posay-sponsored event, competitors faced shifting conditions that tested their skills and resilience. The Topper Trapezoid course layout allowed for tactical racing and close-fought battles across the various fleets.

The fleet was divided into multiple categories, recognising achievements across age groups and sail sizes.

The event also recognised overall champions, with Tomás A'Coistealbha taking the 4.2 Champion title. In the female category, Mollie Hooper-Jones claimed the Female Winter Champion title, while Adam Green emerged as the Overall Winter Champion after a dominant display in the Junior Boys' fleet.

New “Sail Companion” app and live feed from the course

Two budding Entrepreneur members of MYC showcased for the first time their “Sail Companion” platform, which allowed live drone footage from the race course, tracking and results on the large screen in the clubhouse, which was marvelled at and enjoyed by parents and friends of the sailors on the water. This was a beta test of the software, and MYC plans to incorporate the platform in their next event, the March Hare Regatta, on the 29th of March.

The Topper class look forward to the next event in the Topper calendar, The Traveler Series in Ballyholme on Belfast Lough, on the 6th of April.
