North of north....Don Carlos berthed where the Svartisen glacier - the second largest in Europe - fades into the sea

Dublin Bay Old Gaffers' enthusiast Mark Sweetnam is into traditional wooden gaff-rigged boats, and where better to see the best of them than along the coast of Norway? There, some of the finest are into active retirement, beautifully maintained and sailed when possible.

But Mark is a realist about the demands of maintaining a traditional wooden boat in the Irish climate. So for his own sailing and voyaging he has the easily-handled, fast and able 1992-built Najad 420 Don Carlos. And just how fast and able she is was demonstrated with friends and family in a 2024 voyage from Kilrush on the Shannon Estuary to Tromso on the Norwegian coast well north of the Arctic Circle, where the boat was laid up for the winter.

It was and is a very detailed and fascinating venture, best understood by getting along to the DBOGA meeting in Poolbeg Y&BC in nine days' time on Thursday February 20th, when all will be told.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.

Dublin Bay Old Gaffers

The Dublin Bay Old Gaffers Association aims to promotes interest in traditional gaff rig and seamanship, to offer help, advice and comradeship to members and to organise races and rallies for members in the Dublin Bay Area.

The Dublin Bay Old Gaffers normally organise a regatta, two rallies and four races during the summer season and a varied, interesting and well-supported series of talks during the winter (proceeds raised are donated to the RNLI).

Many Dublin Bay members also travel to regattas and rallies organised by other Irish Sea OGA areas.

While the Dublin Bay Old Gaffers activities are focused on  Dublin Bay, they also have a cluster of members in the Cork area and have members from all over Ireland and some in Britain too.

The Association is working up lans to celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2023.  In 2013 a fleet of boats set off around the UK and Ireland to celebrate OGA50.
