Maritime historian David Carroll will give a talk on Admiral Sir Henry Coey Kane as part of the Dublin Bay Old Gaffers’ Association programme next week.
Admiral Kane (1843-1917) lived in Blackrock, Co Dublin and attended Castleknock College in Dublin before enlisting in Britain’s navy at the age of 14.
He is best remembered for a remarkable act of seamanship while in command of the HMS Calliope at Apia in Samoa in 1889.
Warships of many nations were wrecked there in a hurricane, but Admiral Kane managed to save his ship.
HMS Calliope visited Dun Laoghaire, then Kingstown, and other Irish ports towards the end of the 19th century as part of a recruitment campaign.
Carroll will show many rare and interesting images during his illustrated talk, which takes place at Poolbeg Yacht and Boat Club, Dublin, on Thursday, March 19th at 8 pm.
Contributions to the RNLI may be made at the door and all are welcome – but get there early to secure a seat.
