“Grimsby’s Arctic trawlers” is the title of a talk by former Maritime Institute president Richard McCormick in Poolbeg Yacht and Boat Club, Dublin, on February 19th.
The illustrated talk will be hosted by the Dublin Bay Old Gaffers’ Association in aid of the RNLI.
McCormick will recount how he spent summers in Greencastle on the shores of Lough Foyle where local fisherman Jim Clarke – who was helmsman on the HMS Caroline during the Battle of Jutland - taught him how to tie knots, splice rope and mend nets.
He subsequently took up fishing, crewing on Grimsby middle and distant water trawlers in the North Sea and Arctic regions.
McCormick worked in training at the White Fish Authority Flume Tank in Britain, and managed net-making companies in Killybegs and Howth before becoming a senior executive in Bord Iascaigh Mhara.
The talk begins at 8 pm on February 19th, and contributions to the RNLI may be made at the door.
