Viking Marine DMYC Frostbites racing was cancelled again at Dun Laoghaire on Sunday afternoon due to a gusty forecast.
However, the AIB DBSC Spring Chicken Series for cruisers completed its fourth race on Dublin Bay earlier in the day.
Organiser Cormac Bradley confirmed that strong morning winds were already blowing in the Bay, as recorded by the Dublin Bay Buoy.
Forecasts from XCWeather, supported by Met Éireann online, indicated winds of 17–18 knots gusting 30–31 knots. Broadcast reports described Force 6 conditions, strengthening through the afternoon and evening.
“The decision was taken in light of the gust strength and expected deterioration later in the day,” Bradley said.
The Spring Chicken fleet sailed a course in the south of the Bay. Boats started on an initial triangle, leaving an inflatable orange mark to port at 135 degrees for 0.75 nautical miles, then an inflatable gybe mark to port, followed by the Outfall buoy to port and a weather mark to port.
They returned via the Outfall to port and repeated the triangle for four rounds.
A later change of course directed boats, after the Outfall, to a new weather mark off the Forty Foot. They then rounded the Oceanography buoy as a technical mark to port, the original gybe mark to port, and back to the technical weather mark to port.
The first boats finished off Sandycove in lighter conditions ahead of the stronger afternoon forecast from noon onwards.
