The 51st Howth Yacht Club Dinghy Frostbites launched in bright sunshine on Sunday, with 29 boats shaking off the cobwebs in Howth. A gusty south-westerly and choppy seas set a lively tone for day one.
Race Officer Richard Kissane set triangular courses for both races to curb capsizes in the conditions. The format rewarded boat-handling and clean mark roundings.
Once Laser/ILCA-only, the series now welcomes mixed classes. The PY fleet featured Melges 15s, RS Aeros and a resurgent IDRA 14 contingent, alongside a Finn and the full spread of ILCA rigs.

Daragh Sheridan’s RS Aero won both PY races, underlining his Aero Masters European champion pedigree. Melges 15 helms Cormac Farrelly and Stephen Quinn took second and third.
In ILCA 7, series regular Dan O’Connell posted a double win. Conor Murphy was second overall, with thirds shared by Andrejs Samoilovs and Tom Fox.
Darragh Peelo led ILCA 6 with two bullets, ahead of consistent second-placed Dylan Cassidy. In ILCA 4, race wins for Dan Brereton and Florence Butler, plus DNFs, left Nicole Quinn top on day one through consistency.
Matthew Cotter in single-handed mode in his Melges 15
A notable moment saw Matthew Cotter briefly single-handed a Melges 15 after his crew assisted a rescue. He retired soon after as the breeze built.
The series continues through to March. New entries are welcome for one or both series, and sign-ups remain open.
