Monkstown Bay Sailing Club's Chris Bateman, sailing with Lucy Loughton, lost the overall lead on the final day of racing and finished second overall at the  B14 skiff Pre-World Championships.

The only Irish competing (in their first B14 championships together) broke a rack and could not compete in the final race in Sydney Harbour, Australia.

The costly gear failure meant they finished on the same ten points as Britain's Nick Craig and Toby Lewis but lost out on the tie-break rule.

The 32-boat fleet sailed eight races, and two discards sailed in shifty breezes gusting to 18 knots over three days.

Australia's Craig Garmston and Paul Fleming finished third with 16 points

The fleet starts its world championships at the same Woollahra Sailing Club venue on Monday.
