Northern Ireland’s River Faughan will remain open for angling for the remainder of the 2025 angling season, the Loughs Agency confirms.
However, with agreement from the local angling club, anglers have been asked to practice catch-and-release methods until the end of the angling season.
The club has also suspended the sales of day tickets to help conserve fish stocks.
The Faughan has been of particular concern to the Loughs Agency this year as fish counts have fallen below previously observed numbers.
In a statement, the agency said it is “committed to the conservation and protection of the fisheries of the Foyle and Carlingford areas. Safeguarding these vital ecosystems is central to our statutory mandate, and we recognise their importance to local communities.”
The agency added: “Through collaboration with local groups and stakeholders, we strive to preserve the health and resilience of our fisheries and river habitats for present and future generations.”
Earlier this year, the Loughs Agency delivered a series of enhancement works along the River Faughan to improve fish habitats, protect riverbanks and promote sustainable land and water management, as previously reported on Afloat.ie.
