A bathing water prohibition notice has been imposed at Mayo’s Carrowmore beach.

The notice was issued following reports of an issue at Louisburgh wastewater treatment plant, which Uisce Éireann crews are investigating.

The issue has “impacted effluent quality”, according to Uisce Éireann, which says it contacted Mayo County Council’s environment section as soon as it was identified.

“Following consultation with the HSE, a bathing water prohibition notice has been imposed as a precaution at Carrowmore beach,” it says.

“The notice will remain in place until results of bathing water sampling, scheduled for Friday, July 12th, are available,” Uisce Éireann say.

“Follow-up sampling will take place on Monday, July 15th,” it says.

It says it has arranged for the tankering of the wastewater from the treatment plant to be a priority.

“ The bathing water prohibition notice will remain in place at Carrowmore beach until investigations are completed,”it says, adding that it is “working as quickly as possible to rectify the issue”.
