Four coastal rowers from Wicklow have smashed the record for the fastest unsupported row around Ireland.

As previously reported on Afloat.ie, the Row Hard or Go Home team — comprising Diarmuid Ó Briain, Tom Nolan, Mick Dowling and Cormac Conroy — set out from Baltimore in the early hours of 18 June to raise funds for Rathdrum Cancer Support and Vartry Rowing Club Wicklow.

They returned to a heroes’ welcome on Thursday 3 July after more than halving the previous circumnavigation record with an approximate time of 15 days and 16 hours, subject to ratification.

The effort involved a tremendous final push where the quartet skipped sleep for the last 24 hours to row 90 minutes on, 30 minutes off.

So far the fab four have raised more than €38,000 towards their €40,000 goal, and donations can still be made via their GoFundMe page.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
