Rowing Ireland closed the 2025 World Rowing Championships in Shanghai with a historic double gold.
Fiona Murtagh powered to victory in the Women’s Single Sculls. She led from the start and held off a late challenge from Great Britain’s Lauren Henry. A photo finish confirmed Murtagh as world champion in 07:12.27, just 0.03 seconds clear.
Minutes later, Mags Cremen and Fintan McCarthy made history in the Mixed Double Sculls. The pair seized control at the halfway mark and resisted pressure from the Netherlands to win in 06:24.22. It was the first-ever world title in the event.
Ireland also picked up two bronze medals. Jake McCarthy took bronze in the Lightweight Men’s Single Sculls, while Fintan McCarthy teamed with Philip Doyle for bronze in the Men’s Double Sculls.
Other strong results included a fourth place for Siobhán McCrohan in the Lightweight Women’s Single Sculls, and a sixth for Nathan Timoney and Ross Corrigan in the Men’s Pair. Several crews also topped B and C finals.
Rowing Ireland High Performance Lead Coach Dominic Casey praised the team’s efforts. “Our athletes delivered strong performances showing real promise with new crew combinations,” he said. “We are determined to build on these results as we prepare for the 2028 Olympics.”
