At Greenore Port, Co. Louth, planning permission has been granted for a major development of a wind turbine facility at Ireland’s only privately owned port.
The project at the port on Carlingford Lough, reports Irish Independent, could create over 200 jobs for the operation and maintenance of wind turbines off the east coast.
Cork-based Doyle Shipping Group (DSG) proposes to invest €25m in a state-of-the-art operations and maintenance base on lands owned by the port, which is the only other deep-water port outside of Dublin Port, on the east coast of the Republic.
The proposed facility is to support the offshore wind sector along the east coast.
A 10-year lease has been received by Greenore Port Unlimited Company from Louth County Council for the development at the port. In addition to a site for a dwelling house located on the Shore Road, Greenore (total site area of circa 4.88 hectares).
The development at the deepwater port would comprise an Operation and Maintenance (O&M) facility to serve as the support base for future offshore wind array projects in the Irish Sea.
