It rained nonstop in Bangor on Belfast Lough on Saturday, June 14. But that didn’t deter the 38 young Ballyholme Yacht Club Cadets from enjoying and even revelling in the very wet conditions during their annual flotilla outing – this time across Ballyholme Bay to Ballymacormick Beach instead of the usual Helen’s Bay to the west up Belfast Lough.

At ten o’clock, the 18-strong fleet, made up of a Bahia, two Quests, two Fevas, a Laser 2000 and numerous Toppers, set off East in some unsettled seas to land on the beach. The Cadets were accompanied by safety boats.

Despite the torrential rain, everyone had lots of fun digging, making dams, playing beach cricket, tug of war and water frisbee.

Rear Commodore Barbara Polly said afterwards, “Thanks to everyone who made it happen”.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
