Extreme cold water swimmer, adventurer and author Nuala Moore, kayaker Jamie Donald and mountaineer and broadcaster Dermot Somers are among speakers for a winter talk series hosted by Cumann Seoltóireachta an Spidéil (CSS) in Co Galway.

Merchant marine cadet and dinghy sailor and instructor Eoghan Breathnach opened the talk series - entitled “Adventurers in Our Midst” - earlier this month in An Spidéal.

Breathnach, who has sailed and instructed with CSS, Galway Sea Scouts and Galway City Sailing Club, is in his final year at the National Maritime College of Ireland in Ringaskiddy, Co Cork.

He gave a fascinating illustrated account of his experiences on board liquified natural gas tankers navigating from the Suez Canal to southern Australia.

Mountaineer, writer, broadcaster and former diver Dermot Somers will deliver the second talk in the series on Thursday, February 6th, at the Connemara Coast Hotel, na Forbacha (Furbo), Co Galway, and proceeds after costs will be donated to Galway Mountain Rescue.

Extreme cold water swimmer Nuala Moore, a double Guinness world record holder and author of the best-selling memoir, Limitless, will speak in aid of the RNLI on February 27th, while kayaker and CSS club commodore Jamie Donald will be in An Spidéal on March 28th

Nomadic journeys in Siberia, the Sahara, and the hazards of climbing north faces of the European alps are among themes of a bilingual and illustrated talk which Somers will deliver.

With Crossing the Line Films, Somers has presented many travel and adventure programmes for TG4 and RTÉ, including a series on nomadic journeys of the world, which took him to Siberia, the Sahara, Nepal and Tibet.

His fiction, history, and travel-writing have been published in English and in Irish, winning awards in both languages.

He was a member of the successful Irish Everest Expedition, 1993, and he has travelled the world as a climber, with a particular interest in the Alps and the Himalayas.

He is author of a number of books, including the recently published Uncommon Ground: Adventures with Outsiders in Remarkable Terrain (Choice Publishing 2024).

The collection is grounded in the author’s personal experience of extreme landscape, ranging from serious alpinism to desert and arctic travel.
