Documents obtained by Sinn Féin TD for Waterford David Cullinane, through the Freedom of Information Act, have revealed that in 2019, the Dept. of Agriculture, Food & Marine paid RPS, an engineering and consulting firm, to carry out a feasibility study on Dunmore East harbour.

It was then that the government was interested in the viability of a "high-level development” of the southeastern harbour's facilities for cruise ships.

Three options were identified by RPS, ranging from €1.2m to €72.3m. The firm had identified option two as the preferable option, which was estimated at €12.6m.

Once the feasibility study had been completed, there was, however, no further action taken so far.

Deputy Cullinane said, “This is deeply frustrating for Dunmore East and for Waterford."

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
