A new free bus tour service from Dún Laoghaire Harbour to Sandycove on Scotsman’s Bay has started for the summer.
The new service is aimed specifically at cruise ship tourists visiting this season, which as Afloat reported has a total of 80 cruise callers scheduled to anchor offshore and berth within the harbour.
The hop-on, hop-off bus tour on the south Dublin Bay harbour, dubbed the ‘Seaside Discovery', is to operate throughout the summer months and is also open to other tourists visiting the region in addition to locals.
Daily tours operate between 09.30 and 5pm and are run on a 45 minute round-trip basis, which will continue into August. During the tours, a guided commentary will be given along the route highlighting places along the route.
Starting at Dún Laoghaire Harbour (beside the former ferry terminal), the scenic bus route to Sandycove will include stops at the Royal Marine Hotel, the People’s Park, Dún Laoghaire Baths, and the James Joyce Tower & Museum.
In total, there are 8 stops along the route, which are:
Dún Laoghaire Harbour (Harbour Road) beside the former Ferry Terminal Building
Royal Marine Hotel (off Marine Road)
George’s Street (Shopping Centre)
Dún Laoghaire Baths/People’s Park
James Joyce Tower, Sandycove
Opposite Caviston’s in Glasthule
Opposite the Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre
McKenna’s (St Michael’s Hospital)
Bus tours will be based on a 12-week pilot program, and the service is an initiative of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, in partnership with the Dún Laoghaire Business Association.
Operating the pilot service is Seaside Discovery bus tours.
Currently, the tour bus does not cater for wheelchair access, however the Council will be evaluating the demand and use of the service to incorporate into any future plans.
