In an update to Afloat’s coverage of Dún Laoghaire’s St. Patrick’s Day, among the events planned after the parade will be tours of the Naval Service’s LÉ William Butler Yeats, as detailed further below.
The Dún Laoghaire parade starting at Islington Avenue (Newtownsmith) will kick off at 11am, promising a spectacular showcase of Irish culture and community spirit. With over 50 groups participating, including the Irish Coast Guard, RNLI, Goat Boat Tours, Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann, Ukelele Hooley, Twilight Twirlers, Dún Laoghaire Tidy Towns, local sports clubs, dancers, and much more, it is not to be missed.
The Grand Marshal for the parade will be All-Ireland Club Senior Football Champions Cuala GAA, and the MC will be the broadcaster and writer Maïa Dunphy.
Following the parade, St. Patrick will be available for photo opportunities at the Tourist Information Kiosk on Marine Road, and on that nautical note, the navy's LÉ William Butler Yeats (P63) at Carlisle Pier will be open to the public for free tours from 1pm-4pm. No booking is required for the 20-minute approximate tours. Click HERE for further general guidance for health, safety, and security.
The almost 90 metre-long offshore patrol vessel (OPV90) Afloat adds is the third of a quartet of P60-class ships built by Babcock Marine, Appledore, Devon, England. It was commissioned in 2016 and has a crew of 44, including 6 officers.
Also open will be the CoCo Markets in the People's Park, where there will be a virtual experience that will have you hunting for Carlichaun Leprechauns through a fun mobile app.
The event is supported and funded by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council (DLRCoCo), Dún Laoghaire Business Association, and Core Credit Union.
