Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has opened a tender process for a new wheelchair-accessible boating service at Dún Laoghaire Harbour. The initiative, known as Boathub, aims to expand access to Ireland’s largest recreational harbour for wheelchair users and people with disabilities.
The Council said the project “reflects an ongoing commitment to accessibility, inclusion and high-quality public services”. The service will be built around an electric Wheelyboat V20. The vessel, currently under construction, is set to be the first electrically powered wheelchair-accessible boat of its kind in Ireland.
Funding has been provided by DLR, with support from Green Kite and Community Foundation Ireland.
The Council will supply the vessel, an accessible berth, and operational support. The selected operator will manage day-to-day activities, including staffing, safety and customer experience. Planned activities include leisure trips within the harbour, coastal excursions, accessible fishing, and certified training, subject to licensing requirements.
DLR is seeking applications from marine operators, social enterprises, community groups and organisations with experience in disability inclusion and maritime activity. The tender process is open via the eTenders platform. Queries close at noon on 15 May 2026, with submissions due by noon on 22 May 2026.
Subject to procurement timelines, the Boathub service is expected to open for bookings later this summer.
