There is finally going to be a permanent memorial to those who died in the sinking of the R.M.S. Leinster on 10th October 1918.
It will be unveiled on Saturday, October 10, the RMS Memorial Committee has told its supporters who have been seeking a permanent memorial for a long time.
The memorial will record the names of all those who died in the greatest ever single loss of life in the Irish Sea.
In an Email this weekend to relatives, friends and supporters Lucille Ellis of the Memorial Committee has told them: "We are happy to let you know that, thanks to a small group of dedicated individuals liaising with Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, there is finally going to be a permanent memorial to those who died in the sinking."
Richard Cruise, Chairman of the RMS Leinster Memorial Committee says: "The memorial is being put in place due to the support of the elected members of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County, in particular the Council’s Civic Memorial Committee and its Heritage Office.
"The RMS Leinster Memorial Committee has always intended to honour the memory of the late Des Branigan by fulfilling his wish for a fitting memorial to the RMS Leinster by incorporating the existing anchor while naming those who tragically lost their lives in the disaster."
To complement this occasion, the RMS Leinster Memorial Committee and the National Maritime Museum are hosting additional events on the day.
The Committee is contacting all its supporters with full information about the plans for October 10.
