MEP for Ireland South Kathleen Funchion, has criticised “cripplingly long waiting lists for the renewal of foreshore and aquaculture licences”.
Speaking from Brussels, Ms Funchion of Sinn Fein said that “it has come to my attention that some aquaculture farmers have had to wait a ridiculously long amount of time to get renewals for licences”.
“In some cases, these waits have even led to groups being ineligible to receive EU funding due to the limbo period they are forced to wait in,”she has said.
“It is simply not acceptable that any organisation misses out on EU funding due to waiting for the state to carry out assessments,”she has said.
“Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have a responsibility to ensure that licensing services are fit for purpose and deliver results in a timely manner,”she continued.
“This should not be tolerated in any sector but for aquaculture, which is already not receiving its fair share of EU funding, it is an extra kick in the teeth to miss out due to government carelessness,”she said.
“I have written to Minister [of State for Fisheries Timmy] Dooley, calling on him and his department to rectify the matter,”she has said.
Mr Dooley is due to address IFA Aquaculture’s postponed annual general meeting in Athlone, Co Westmeath on Monday, April 27th.
