The Joint Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs will discuss quotas and the EU Common Fisheries Policy with Minister for State for Fisheries Timmy Dooley and other key stakeholders on Tuesday (Oct 14)
The meeting at 11 am in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House will also discuss the Sustainability Impact Assessment.
It will be split into two sessions to hear from representatives of the Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation Ltd, Killybegs Fishermen’s Organisation Ltd and Irish Fish Producers Organisation Ltd at 11am.
From 12:20 pm, the committee will hear from Minister of State Dooley, officials from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and representatives from Bord Iascaigh Mhara and the Marine Institute.
Committee Cathaoirleach Conor McGuinness said: “Ahead of this year’s EU Council meeting, I am keen for the committee to meet with industry representatives and with Minister of State Dooley and his officials.”
“ Key issues for the Committee include the need for fairer allocation of quotas for the Irish fishing industry, the Government’s plan for managing the looming mackerel crisis next year, and the issue of enforcement and sanctioning,” he said.
“Other areas of interest for the committee with the Minister and the department include whether re-evaluating the way TAC shares are allocated to members since 1983 has been discussed with the EU; the impact of inadequate quota share on Irish coastal communities, and when was the last time the department evaluated its quota-management policies, and what were the findings?” he said.
The committee has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
The meeting in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.
