Ireland’s agriculture and marine ministers are in Brussels for two days of EU negotiations that will decide next year’s fishing opportunities.
Minister Martin Heydon and Minister of State Timmy Dooley will participate in the Agriculture and Fisheries Council, where quota allocations for 2025 are the central agenda item.
Heydon said the meeting is “a valuable opportunity” to set out Ireland’s position, adding that he will “work with Minister of State Dooley to secure the best outcome possible for the Irish fishing sector”.
Dooley noted that most Irish fish stocks are shared with third countries. He said the recent EU–UK–Norway outcome “represents a balanced result overall”, and that attention now shifts to “important internal EU matters, in particular the Hague Preferences”.
The ministers met Irish industry representatives in Brussels ahead of the talks. Sector groups outlined their priorities as member states prepare for intensive negotiations with Fisheries Commissioner Costas Kadis.
Ireland will also engage in bilateral meetings with Germany, Estonia and Slovakia to discuss shared fisheries interests.
