EU fisheries ministers are due to meet in Cork early next week.
The ministers from 27 member states will gather in Cork on July 28th and 29th as part of Ireland’s EU presidency.
The informal meeting will be chaired by Ireland’s Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon, and will bring together fisheries ministers, the European Commission and invited institutional representatives.
Discussions are expected to focus on the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy, including consideration of how the union can sustainably develop its fisheries and aquaculture sectors and ensure that the important role of these sectors is appropriately reflected in the regulatory framework.
The Irish Presidency says it believes that “enabling generational renewal is the pathway to a sustainable future for fisheries and aquaculture in Europe”.
“Consequently, the informal meeting of EU Fisheries Ministers is an opportunity for fisheries ministers to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing new entrants to Europe’s seafood sector,”it says.
However, the voices of actual fishermen or their representative organisations are not expected to be part of the agenda.
The itinerary includes a visit to Charles Fort In Kinsale for photo opportunities, and optional tours of the Marine Institute research vessel Tom Crean.
