The Government has extended fuel support for Irish fishermen for a further five months, from August to December 2026, under a €31.2 million package announced as part of Budget 2027.
The additional funding covers fuel support schemes for fishermen, farmers, agricultural contractors and horticulture producers affected by increased fuel costs.
Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Martin Heydon confirmed the extension in his Budget statement on Tuesday (6 October).
"I am pleased to have secured agreement on the extension to the end of this year of the important fuel supports schemes provided for farmers and agricultural contractors, fishermen and women and horticulture producers impacted by higher fuel prices," Heydon said.
He added that the €31.2 million allocation would cover the five months from August to December 2026 and would be implemented rapidly by his Department.
Fishing Fleet Fuel Supports
The extension follows earlier Government measures introduced in response to rising fuel prices affecting the fishing industry and other primary production sectors.
The Fishing and Aquaculture Registered Vessel Fuel Support Scheme was established to provide assistance to eligible fishing and aquaculture vessel owners facing higher operating costs.
Fuel is a significant operating expense for the Irish fishing fleet, particularly for vessels engaged in fuel-intensive offshore fishing operations.
The extension provides for continued support during the final five months of 2026.
Fisheries Allocation Awaited
The €31.2 million covers several sectors and is not exclusively allocated to fisheries.
The Government has not specified how much of the additional allocation will be directed specifically to fishing and aquaculture businesses.
Details of any revised payment rates, eligibility conditions or application arrangements for the extended period have also yet to be confirmed.
Separate from €174.8m Seafood Budget
The fuel support extension is separate from the €174.8 million allocated to Ireland's fishing and seafood sector under Budget 2027.
That allocation includes an additional €20 million to progress recommendations from the Food Vision Seafood Sector Sub-Group, covering seafood processing, inshore fisheries conservation and income sustainability, shellfish processing, whitefish, pelagic and prawn fishermen, and aquaculture licensing.
The fuel support extension provides a separate measure addressing operating costs faced by fishing businesses.
