Taoiseach Micheál Martin has warned that fuel aboard a tanker off the west coast could be sold on if it cannot be discharged.
Speaking on RTÉ’s News at One, he said the Government is engaging with representative bodies and recognises the pressure from rising fuel prices.
He described the situation linked to the Whitegate blockade as “severe”.
The tanker, carrying an estimated six million litres of oil, is currently positioned off Galway Port.
It has been unable to berth due to full storage capacity at the fuel depot during the blockade.
Mr Martin said that if the cargo cannot be landed, “someone else” may purchase the fuel.
The development raises concerns about supply disruption and fuel availability.
