Galway City Council says it welcomes the decision by An Coimisiún Pleanála to grant permission for a new port for the city.
As Afloat has reported, the approval with conditions for the project, estimated to cost 290 million euro, was issued on the same day as approval for the Galway ring road, which may run through parts of the city and will involve the demolition of houses.
“The approved expansion of Galway Port will support the continued operation and expansion of core port activities, strengthening its role as a key economic asset for the city and region,” Galway City Council says.
“The port extension will also create future opportunities for the redevelopment of the inner harbour area,” it says.
The local authority points out in a statement that Galway Harbour Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Galway City Council.
“Following a detailed review of An Coimisiún Pleanála’s decision, Galway City Council and Galway Harbour Company will now proceed to the next phase of the project,” it says.
This will include “detailed design, procurement and financing, in line with relevant national infrastructure guidelines and governance requirements,” it says.
