Thun Gemini, the oil tanker that has been anchored since Friday, RTE News reports, has docked at the Port of Galway after being stuck offshore due to the blockade that was in place, Fuels for Ireland has confirmed.
The 4,300 dwt tanker from Antwerp, Belgium, was unable to unload six million litres of fuel, but after the blockade was lifted earlier yesterday (12 April), it entered the western port to berth around 2pm.
Furthermore, according to Fuels for Ireland, the tanker’s cargo is to take approximately 12 hours to offload the fuel ashore at the terminal.
It is understood that by 8am today (13 April), normal operations will have resumed at the single dock (Dun Aengus) port, permitting the Thun Gemini to be able to unload and transfer to road tankers for filling up. In an update, Afloat tracked the tanker having completed its operations beforehand, departing in the early hours of this morning.
The fuel blockade by hauliers at Galway Port ended following an early-morning Garda operation.
