The campaign to lift a ban on watersports at Galway’s Silver Strand beach has stepped up its efforts with posters mounted ahead of the May 22nd by-election in the Galway West constituency.
“Vote to Save Silverstrand Beach, Barna”, the posters state, urging voters to raise the issue with candidates who are running in the by-election.
As Afloat has reported, enthusiasts say there was no consultation or engagement from Galway City Council prior to the introduction of new signage in July 2025 prohibiting watersports.
The city council has recently said its own signage at the Blue flag beach doesn’t ban paddle-boarding, body-boarding, and kayaking, and that its priority is safety.
However, the Galway City Watersports Group points to the council’s code of conduct on the beach, which states that “the designated bathing area is strictly for bathing only” and states “Do not surf, windsurf, kite surf, paddle-board or kayak inside the bathing area”.
Galway City Watersports is calling on the city council to follow best international practice by introducing a Blue Flag-compliant beach management and zoning plan for all Galway city beaches.
“Such a plan would prioritise safety, while ensuring inclusivity and shared access for swimmers, watersports users, families and all members of the community,” it says.
