Nearly two years into a 10-year action plan aimed at reviving Ireland’s offshore islands and fewer than 30 applications for home renovation grants have been received.
While the scheme was described as garnering “significant international interest”, as The Irish Times reports the reality has been more subdued, according to new figures released by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
Under the Our Living Islands policy, grants of up to €84,000 are available for those those looking to renovate existing properties on the islands, to live in as their own home.
Twenty-three islands are covered by the scheme, including such pictureque locations as Bere Island, Inishbofin, Clare Island and Arranmore — which has touted its suitability for remote workers since 2019.
But despite the hype around people getting paid to pack up and enjoy island life, just 29 applications for renovation grants have been received, with 20 approved.
