Two routes on Mayo’s Clare Island are among 22 new walking trails funded by Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht Dara Calleary.
Clare Island’s Fawnglass and Knocknaveena loops, developed by Comhar na nOileán CTR, have been included in the new funding round.
Other coastal routes on the list include Rosslare cliff walk trail in Co Wexford and Siúlóid an tSáis which starts from and finishes at Brandon Point in Co Kerry.
The 22 new trails announced last week are spread over 10 counties.
Siúlóid an tSáis in Kerry involves 40 landowners, and the Keenagh Loop in Mayo has the support of over 20 landowners.
Calleary has also announced funding of over €465,000 under the Walks Scheme Development Fund to support and enhance 49 trails that are already on the scheme.
Projects supported include small scale trail surface improvements, signage and waymarking, new picnic and recreation areas, and rerouting of trails away from busy roads.
His department explains that these projects will be led by local development companies in collaboration with landowners, community trail management organisations and other stakeholders.
