Árainn Mhór Island in County Donegal has improved beach access for wheelchair users with the introduction of a new all-terrain beach wheelchair.
The project was funded through a €20,000 grant from the Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) North under the Coastal Communities Development Scheme.
Delivered by BIM through Ireland’s Seafood Development Programme, the scheme is co-funded by the Irish Government and the EU’s European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF).
The wheelchair will allow users to cross sandy terrain and enjoy Árainn Mhór’s Blueway trails and coastline—areas that were previously inaccessible. The initiative was led by Comharchumann Oileán Árainn Mhór, the island’s community co-operative, which has supported local development since 1976.
Interim BIM CEO Richard Donnelly said: “This project shows how FLAG support, delivered by BIM, can make a practical and lasting difference in island communities.” “Improving accessibility ensures our coastal amenities can be enjoyed by everyone,” he added.
Funding also covered a sit-on lawnmower to help maintain green spaces, supporting both the resident community and tourism. Co-op manager Nóirín Uí Mhaoldomhnaigh welcomed the support: “Our beaches and public spaces are central to life on Árainn Mhór. This investment allows more people to enjoy them.”
The project reflects FLAG’s wider mission to back inclusive, community-led initiatives that strengthen island life.
